Compaq ended the year 1987 triumphantly, surpassing the goal of one billion dollars in revenue. This result makes it one of the first American companies in terms of rapid growth and financial strength. Expansion plans have been accelerated to cope with the demand for Deskpro systems and its Portable 286 386, that, during 1987, had exceeded expectations, delaying company deliveries both in the U.S. than in Europe. With the beginning of a new year production problems have been entirely solved by improving the organization of the existing plant in Houston, which we visited and surprisingly found technology being combined with the ergonomics of work, and then with the opening of a second factory that was built a few hundred meters from the one already existing. Rod Canion, company president, intends to concentrate the efforts of the company in the production of high-end personal computers, trusting in the success of the Compaq‘s Flex architecture that represents an alternative to Micro Channel by IBM. In the world, today there are as many as ten million machines using a traditional type of bus, with which Flex architecture is compatible while only 200,000 are systems based on the Micro Channel.
