Description
New Hp products to manage local and wide area networks
Main Article Text
Hewlett -Packard has taken another step towards the fully open Iso Osi standards, proposing a new family of products designed specifically to manage local and wide area networks, in accordance with the Open System interconnect on network management. The founder of this new generation of software is Open View Windows, a working package on the Vectra personal computer that provides a user interface similar to that of Microsoft Windows, dedicated to the representation of information and the constituent elements of a LAN (local area network) or WAN (wide area network) (see photo at right). On this programmable interface are modules adapted and dedicated to the analysis of detailed aspects of management, such as the monitoring of the CPU in the network (OpenView status and diagnostic monitor), performance supervision (OpenView performance monitor), remote control of command execution and program execution (OpenView network command interpreter), centralized analysis of line status automatic ability to individuate problems (In -service transmission impairment measurement set) and the management of connections between a local network and another (OpenView Bridge Manager). The four products intended for geographical networks (Itims, interpreter and two monitors) are designed to work on systems HP 300 and X.25 networks; however, Hewlett -Packard (Via G. Di Vittorio, 9, 20063 Cernusco s N – I – tel. 02 923691) guarantees the possibility that one be able to connect to networks of third-party vendors, such as the system of IBM’s Sna – NetView and any environment meeting the Osi CMIS (Common management information services) and CMIP(Common management information protocol) specifications.
The strategy that inspired this announcement brought added value to the network management structure provided by Osi. Why the recorded data in a standard format usable, according to the specifications of the International Organization for Standardization is useable, must be analyzed and presented graphically to the people who can make decisions on the management of the network. The icon based interface serves to facilitate access to information while the form below collects, processes, and conveys the information to the console’s operating decision maker. Some of these modules, as were seen, were developed directly by HP, while others will be produced by independent software houses. Except for the Network command interpreter, which is already available, the component members of the OpenView group will be distributed on the domestic market by years end. So far only an approximate price for Windows OpenView, complete with Vectra personal computer, has been communicated; the price will be in the area of about ten million lire.
